For Sales Consultant Caitlin MacMillan, the greatest motivation comes from supporting teachers in their daily work—and seeing firsthand how Sanoma’s learning solutions make a difference in classrooms.

From teaching to sales

Before joining Sanoma Learning, Caitlin spent four years teaching English in the first and second years of secondary education. Growing up bilingual in Dutch and English gave her a natural connection to language, and as a teacher she enjoyed passing that on to her students—not just grammar, but also culture and curiosity about the world.

“As much as I loved teaching, I realized there were other talents I wanted to develop. When I saw an opening at VAN IN, a publisher I already admired, I decided to take a leap of faith and apply.”

That leap brought her into the sales team for secondary education. Today, Caitlin spends her days visiting schools, encouraging teachers to use Sanoma’s platform, and learning firsthand how products can be improved to best support teachers and students.

“My teaching background gives me a unique perspective on what teachers need, what makes their work easier, and how we can support them throughout the school year.”

First impressions and daily rewards

Caitlin remembers being drawn in immediately by the company’s values and atmosphere. “What makes Sanoma a great place to work is the energy and enthusiasm to focus on what truly matters: empowering teachers.”

Her role is diverse and dynamic: no two days look alike. Whether she’s on the road visiting schools, working in the office with colleagues, or preparing from home during school holidays, the variety keeps her motivated.

“What I like most is the chance to meet teachers every day, hear their stories, and know that what we offer can make a real difference. When a teacher tells me our product has made their life easier, it’s the best reward I could ask for.”

Growth through challenges

Since joining, Caitlin has embraced every opportunity to learn. She points to her mentor, Frederik, as an important guide in developing her sales expertise and understanding the importance of building lasting relationships with clients.

“One of my proudest moments was at our Summer Academies. I was assigned the largest groups to present to, which really pushed me to study hard and master all the tools. The positive feedback I received from the teachers—not only about the platform, but also about me as a trainer—was incredibly rewarding.”

Caitlin is also proud of how quickly she adapted to this new world after leaving the classroom. “The supportive atmosphere and friendly colleagues made the transition smooth and positive. I feel trusted here, and that gives me confidence to keep growing.”

Balance and wellbeing

With a role that keeps her moving between schools, the office, and home, Caitlin values the flexibility Sanoma provides.

“Since I started working here, I’ve experienced the work–life balance as very positive. Having the flexibility to work from home is a big plus. No week looks the same, so I go with the rhythm of the schools. I like to take a short walk after a visit or stop for a coffee to pause and breathe.”

This flexibility helps her stay energized and ensures that she can balance her professional responsibilities with her personal life.

A purpose-driven role

For Caitlin, purpose is at the heart of her work. “Our ‘let’s go for it’ mentality is everywhere—not just in sales, but across the company. Marketers, publishers, managers—we all share the same vision of supporting teachers, listening to them, and learning from them.”

That shared sense of purpose, she says, makes every success meaningful. “When teachers appreciate the depth and quality of our books, and they show real gratitude, it’s an amazing feeling.”

Lessons in change and growth

This past year has been full of milestones for Caitlin—starting a new job, renovating her home, and planning a wedding all at once. Looking back, she sees it as a lesson in embracing change.

“Change can feel scary. It can keep us in our comfort zone, where we’re afraid to move forward. But this year has shown me that true growth happens when we take risks and focus on the future. It hasn’t always been easy, but it’s been worth it.”

Her guiding principle? “Go for it—even when it feels uncertain. That’s where growth happens.”

A fun fact

And outside of work? Caitlin shares a hobby she’s grown into thanks to her husband’s lifelong passion: birdwatching.

“After five years together, I’ve come to love birds as much as he does. One of our favorites is the magpie. They’re clever, social, curious, and even show empathy—they think, play, and remember much like we do!”
