September 25th is UN SDG Flag Day, a global movement to raise a flag in support of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As a key focus of Sanoma’s inclusive learning strategy, the SDGs help guide our efforts to create a positive impact for a better world.
With the aim of empowering students to respond to global challenges, our teams develop learning methods that support the Sustainable Development Goals. From the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, we have identified nine Goals that are most relevant to our business and where we can make the greatest impact. From quality education to gender equality, and from partnerships for the goals to climate action, the SDGs have been effectively embedded into our Sustainability Strategy.
Our business is at the core of implementing UN SDG 4: Quality Education, which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. By delivering inclusive learning solutions, Sanoma Learning supports quality education for around 25 million students across Europe.
In 2024, Sanoma also launched a Social Bond Framework to contribute to the advancement of UN SDG 4, focusing on equal access to education. Further highlights and our sustainability statement are available in the 2024 Annual Report.
The Sustainable Development Goals have also been integrated into our learning solutions. Our learning companies have prominent examples on how SDGs can be translated to everyday education. Discover some of them below:
Ados pour la planète (Sanoma Italia)
Ados pour la planète invites students to engage deeply with contemporary global challenges through French language learning. The course integrates environmental themes, sustainability, climate action, and civic responsibility across communicative activities, readings, and projects. Students develop critical thinking, collaborative skills, and ethical awareness by exploring real issues, such as waste management, climate innovation, and social justice.
Construyendo Mundos (Santillana)
In Spain, the integration of the Sustainable Development Goals into teaching materials is part of the curriculum. In the Construyendo Mundos (Building Worlds) series, the SDGs are fully present. The teaching materials of the method contain a specific section with additional information related to an SDG or a concrete exercise that contributes to a better world for all.
The World in the Class (Sanoma Utbildning)
The World in the Class is a practical and inspiring handbook for teachers based on the school's mission of democracy and values. The book touches on topics such as human rights, norms and values, resource criticism and the global goals. In this handbook, the authors share successful teaching practices that connect classroom learning with real-world experiences through local, national, and global perspectives.
