Q&A: AI and content creation at Sanoma Learning
This page answers key questions about how AI supports content creation, its uses, and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) at Sanoma Learning.
We only modify content with AI, for which the applicable agreements grant us the required usage rights to do so and usage rights are always cleared before publishing.
By principle, our view is that copyright ownership of a content asset persists regardless of modification with AI.
As copyright persists regardless of modification with AI, we honor the applicable agreements, including compensation terms, also when modifying and re-publishing works.
No. All content that we create and publish gets the 'human touch' of our expert editors regardless of it having been created with or without the assistance of AI. No AI-generated content is ever published as-is and must always undergo human editing.
Yes. From an IPR-perspective, there are no limitations for using AI tools as a sparring partner in content creation (e.g., for generating ideas) as long as the AI-generated content is not published and no copyright-protected content is uploaded to the AI tool in the process. Additionally, our employees may also upload licensed content to our approved AI tools for idea generation, as long as Sanoma Learning has the required usage rights to do so.
No. No content (owned by SL or third parties) is used for training AI models by Sanoma Learning. The AI tools used by our employees have been thoroughly assessed to ensure content is not used for model training by the tools’ vendors.
Any use of AI tools by external authors or vendors requires separate approval from Sanoma Learning, including uploading Sanoma Learning content into AI tools.
For now, we only allow external authors and other vendors to use AI tools as a sparring & ideation partner for example to generate ideas without putting any copyright-protected content into the AI tool (SL or third party's). As such, no AI-generated outputs may be directly used by external authors for creating content for Sanoma Learning.
Authors are and remain a key asset for Sanoma Learning. There is a lot of uncertainty and worry among authors about how AI will affect their standing as creators of learning materials - especially related to compensation.
We respect these worries and therefore we commit to being transparent about how we use authors' content with AI and we honor existing agreements.
It is also important to stress that in our view, modification and re-use of works with AI does not affect the copyright to these works and therefore rightsholders’ entitlement to compensation persists.
We do not permit Students and Teachers (or other customers) to upload any Sanoma Learning content into third-party AI tools.
We only use content assets in Sanoma Learning's AI Products (e.g., AI Teacher Assistant), for which the applicable agreements provide us the right to do so.
Compensation is based on the individual agreements with the applicable rightsholders.
By principle, copyright to a content asset persists regardless of modification with AI. Our AI-based products generate outputs primarily based on Sanoma Learning's method's manuscripts. As such, output copyright in our AI products remains with the original rightsholders.
Sanoma Learning has the exclusive right to exploit these outputs in accordance with the respective agreements. Therefore, Students and Teachers using our AI Products may use the outputs only in the ways defined in the products' Terms and Conditions.
